For many of us, the dishwasher is an essential part of the home. The time saved that you would otherwise spend on washing dishes can be spent with loved ones. Also, if you have small children at home, the dishwasher is full every day.
However, you cannot put some dishes in the dishwasher. Either because of their size or because of the material they are made of.
What’s wrong with the dishwasher
Antique or hand-painted crockery – washing in the dishwasher could damage the paint. In the case of antique tableware, the color of the material may also change or the paintings may gradually fade. Likewise, children’s spoons decorated with polymer clay should not be placed in the dishwasher.
Wooden cutting boards, spatulas and turners – heat and water can deform or break the wood. After each use, bacteria will settle in the cracks and washing will be more difficult.
Expensive and quality knives – the handles of these knives are often made of wood and could break or deform if washed in the dishwasher. In addition, knives with carbon steel blades require special care and therefore hand washing. Carbon steel is subject to corrosion. After washing, the knife should be wiped with a cloth.
Plastic containers – some containers do not withstand high temperatures and deform. Therefore, if you choose plastic boxes, you need to purchase a strong and durable material.
Aluminum tools – at the time of purchase, carefully study the label or packaging so that the dishes are suitable for washing in the dishwasher. In some cases, the use of certain chemicals and heat can cause dullness and darkening of the dishes.
Crystal – if you have crystal plates at home, do not put them in the dishwasher at all. Not only can it crack, but it can become dull or scratched after repeated washing.
Glasses or other plates with paper labels – the paper label gets wet due to the water and the heat of the dishwasher, and not only will it come off the surface it rests on, but it could clog the washing machine arms or the dishwasher pump.
When buying new cookware, always read the packaging or label to make sure the cookware is dishwasher safe.
