Those who earn too much to receive an energy award can put a contract in the name of a child: “Backdoor that raises ethical questions”

Support is only available to singles earning no more than € 62,000 net per year and couples with a maximum joint taxable income of € 125,000 net. For higher incomes, part of this energy support would then be recovered through the tax return. But it is also possible to escape this and thus still be able to keep the entire prize.

People who have too high an income to be eligible for the energy premium could still receive it if they transfer the energy contract in the name of their children, even if they are still minors and therefore have no income. The entire energy prize would then go to the children.

“This is a loophole that raises ethical issues and it is up to the government to do something about it,” says tax law professor Michel Maus (VUB). “Additional conditions should be linked to the awarding of the award and there should be subsequent checks. Because obviously a Belgian remains a Belgian and there will always be people who will try to get the most out of their abilities. The energy support must be there for the people who have it. need”.
