Formula 1 is always visiting new circuits and, if the mayor of the city of Barranquilla does, a Grand Prix in Colombia could be part of the World Championship program as early as the following year.
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali never tires of pointing out how many potential venues are showing interest in visiting the premier class. In fact, in recent years, more and more new Grands Prix have been added to the calendar. This year, for example, the first of the GP took place in Miami and in 2023 Formula 1 will return to Las Vegas to take part in a spectacular road race there.
Nothing came of the plans for a South African GP next year, but a new race in Colombia could be added the following year. At least that’s what Jaime Pumarejo, mayor of the Colombian city of Barranquilla dreams of. He told Blu Radio that a Formula 1 delegation had already visited the city on the subject.
“We can say that the trial is going very well,” said the local politician, who also confirmed that the final decision is still pending. “But we’ve made progress so far,” he said.
And the 41-year-old explained that the related GP hosting contract could be signed for ten years. The GP could therefore take place as early as 2024. Pumarejo is certain that the World Cup round in Colombia, to be held as the “Caribbean Grand Prix”, would be financially self-sufficient.
With over 1.3 million inhabitants, Barranquilla is the fourth largest city in Colombia and is located in the northwest of the country, on the Caribbean Sea and Rio Magdalena.
