(Östlands-Posten): If you charge your car via an outlet, you lose a lot of energy. It can be expensive with today’s electricity prices. This is what Roger Ytre-Hauge, who heads motoring at Frende Forsikring, says.
The data comes from ADAC, the largest European association of motorists. The analysis shows that the power loss is significant if you charge the electric car, or the hybrid car, the old fashioned way.
This is the solution
From 1 July 2022, the new rules for charging electric vehicles also came into force. The new rules state that if you are going to have a new charging point at home, you must have a charging station. In the new standard, neither ordinary nor industrial sockets are valid.
– Power loss offers another reason to install a charging box at home. The charging capacity is greater and it also goes faster. Add up to 30% more power loss and the arguments for keeping the grip on aren’t that many anymore, says Ytre-Hauge.
Investigations from the ADAC also show that there is a significant loss of power when comparing a charging box to a lower power outlet.
– As electricity prices are now, it is stupid to charge with low capacity. You use more time, while losing a lot of power. Then the electricity bill quickly gets high. That’s why the charging box is clearly the best solution, says the head of engine engineering in Frende.
New rules for charging electric cars
– It’s an investment to make, but if you can afford it, it can quickly pay off the investment, says Roger Ytre-Hauge.
The new installation standard has no retroactive effect.
– This means that if you already have an installation that has been type approved with an electric car charging socket previously, it will not become illegal with the new standard. But it can still get expensive quickly, says Roger Ytre-Hauge.
