According to Ameli.fr, the scoliosis refers to a permanent deformation of the spine and this: frontally, in profile and transversely.
This deformation is due to a rotation of the vertebrae relative to each other. In scoliosis, the spine is twisted and its natural curvatures are altered. This results in a hump-like deformity of the upper back.
But be careful, scoliosis must be distinguished from a scoliotic attitude. In this case, the spinal column exhibits a deviation that can be reduced with a change of position. There is therefore no rotation of the vertebrae. However, in the case of scoliosis, the deviation is not reducible.
The scoliotic attitude is caused by a bad position that can have different origins: limbs of unequal length, an imbalance of the pelvis, a position taken by the body to avoid certain pains.
The scoliosis it is relatively common. It can result from hereditary causes, congenital anomalies or lesions. It can also develop later, usually in early adolescence. The cause cannot therefore be identified. In general, the spine bends to the right when the curve is in the dorsal region and to the left when the curve is in the lumbar region. As a result, the right shoulder is higher than the left. Or that one side is higher than the other. The chest may not be symmetrical.
