Bank Employees: There is no return to work before a security plan is approved

The Executive Council of the Federation of Bank Employee Unions in Lebanon held a meeting dedicated to discussing developments related to the security plan in the banking sector and issued the following statement:

“1. The Federation Council asks to guarantee safety in work centers, and the Federation refuses to take colleagues back to work without the presence of safety measures to guarantee their safety and that of depositors during working hours . Assaulting the banks with the force of arms, is still being published on social media, the latest of which is the news released by the gathering of depositors in Lebanese banks: “Advice to all depositors, Thursday, the day of the attack on banks, attack a murderer and free your money, whoever has the courage has the right to free his money and has priority … “.
2. The Federation Council calls on the security services to prosecute those who have made these threats that strain the public atmosphere and encourage violations of the law and the use of weapons to intimidate banking workers.
3. The Federation Council reiterates the need to speed up the tackling of the problem of deposits in the banking sector and to provide the necessary guarantees to depositors of different size of their deposits and to stop launching plans that exempt the State from taking its responsibilities, as it wasted depositors’ money due to failed financial policies, the latest of which was the 2022 draft budget.
4. The Federation Council regrets that all bank customers, especially those who receive their salary through the settlement system, continue to suffer from the closure of banks, but on the other hand, the safety of colleagues who have been threatened after the recent events in some bank branches cannot ignore, and calls on all depositor associations to cease the policies followed to threaten banks and their employees and the adoption of the means of protest provided for by law.
5. The Federation Council has decided to invite the Federation Council of Delegates to a meeting to discuss the modalities for the success of the sit-in, which will be held by the end of the month, in order to confirm that the return to work it is conditional on the adoption of a safety plan that guarantees the safety of workers in the banking sector.
