The king and queen were in deep mourning and were accompanied by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, and the Spanish Ambassador to London, José Pascual Marco. After spending about three minutes in the burning chapel, Fr Felipe and Doña Letizia withdrew, while hundreds of citizens continued to parade neatly in front of the coffin to pay homage to the sovereign, who died on 8 September at the age of 96.
