Al-Manar Sports website »UEFA decides the fate of the Champions League in America

Aleksander Ceferin, president of the European Football Association (UEFA), has closed the doors to rumors that some Champions League matches will be played outside the continent.

Several reports had spoken of an Executive Committee meeting in “UEFA” to study options for playing group stage matches in neutral regions, such as the United States of America, China and the Middle East.

These proposals have come as the tournament prepares for a new change in its system, starting in 2024, in which the group stage will be replaced by the championship system.

But plans to play matches outside of Europe remain only discussions, according to Ceferin, who closed the door to those proposals during a press conference on Wednesday.

“With all due respect to the media, it is impossible to imagine this kind of news,” Ceferin said.

“I would have known if there had been discussions on how to play Champions League matches outside of Europe, and I don’t know anything about it,” he added.
