Grigor Dimitrov shares a touching tribute to Roger Federer

Grigor Dimitrov praised Roger Federer for being a great source of inspiration to people around the world and wished him all the best for the next chapter of his life. Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, will retire from professional tennis after the Laver Cup.

Throughout his career Federer has been known as a great champion and a very kind and generous person. “Roger, you have inspired millions on and off the pitch. You have led by example, showing courage, compassion and strength with every step you have taken to the top.

I am lucky to have met you in person and have been inspired by the moments we shared on the pitch. I wish you all the best for the next chapter of your life and I have no doubt that your future will be as extraordinary as your past, “wrote Dimitrov on Instagram.

Dimitrov beat Federer once

Dimitrov, 31, has faced Federer eight times.

In these eight games, Dimitrov has won once against Federer. Dimitrov, nicknamed Baby Fed early in his career, lost his first eight games to Federer. At the 2019 US Open, Dimitrov then scored his first and only victory against the Swiss.

Three years ago at Flushing Meadows – it was Federer’s last appearance at the US Open – Dimitrov defeated the Swiss 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2. After beating Federer in his first semifinal at the US Open, Dimitrov lost to Daniil Medvedev.

In recent years, Dimitrov has admitted that he is pleased that Baby Fed’s nickname is now a thing of the past. Being compared to Federer early in his career didn’t help Dimitrov, it just put extra pressure on the Bulgarian’s back. During his career, Dimitrov has won at all levels except the Grand Slam tournaments.
