Inside a cramped room, some are seated in uniform, others in suits, close to each other. They are members of the so-called Public Council of the self-proclaimed Republic of Donetsk.

They had a show of hands on Monday. They want a referendum to join Russia.

The same request came in the other self-proclaimed republic of Luhansk. In addition, there were also requests from the occupied Ukrainian regions of Zaporizhzhya and Kherson. Meduza reports.

The referendums will be held as early as September 23-27, according to the Kremlin news agency Ria Novosti.

The local Donetsk leader wrote a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. There he demands that the republic become part of Russia “as soon as possible”.

In other words: already this weekend, the Russian authorities can claim that new parts of Ukraine are part of Russia.

It could change the whole war.
