Scottish Celtic fans protest in homage to Queen Elizabeth II

“If you hate the royal family, clap your hands”, Sang the fans of the Celticduring the minute of silence in homage to Queen Elizabeth, while a banner with the same phrase was unrolled in the stands.

They did so during a minute of applause that was originally meant to honor the Queen Isabella IIdied last Thursday 8 September.

The homage to Queen Elizabeth II promoted by the authorities of the Scottish Premier was thus boycotted by the fans of Celtic, an antimonarchical team from the beginning.

Celtic fans had already made their position clear last Wednesday when the team faced Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions Leaguegame in which they hung a banner with the inscription “fuck the crown” (“fuck the crown”, in Spanish).

The television images showed all the cheers: players, coaches and managers, all accompanied by the singing of Celtic fans in the background.

In the end, the Scottish side lost the game to St Mirren 2-0, their first Premiership defeat in nearly a year.
