compared to 20 years ago, the gameplay is only secondary.
This is also not entirely true, even more than 20 years ago there were many games that depended on the theme, the beautiful minis and / or the beautiful artwork. Why do you think Warhammer (40k) is still so great after decades, not because it had such good rules … How popular was HeroQuest? How good would you call the gameplay? (sure why nowadays) Don’t forget the mountain FFG games of the beginning of this century with mountains of mini?
With a game like Dark Souls BG you can adapt the rules relatively easily to something you like to play. It is ideal? No, absolutely no! But the rules are much easier to adjust than making all of the game components yourself, especially the minis. Although nowadays with 3D printing it is much simpler.
The theme and atmosphere are extremely important to me in games. That’s why I support something like Tang Garden. And for games that are mostly gameplay, you buy them after getting loads of reviews (7 Wonders Duel, Century, etc). Unless you’re talking about remakes (Thunderstone Quest) or expansions (Star Realms).
Also, there were a lot of mini games that gave you a lot of things for little money. Check out the mountain of things you got for a GBP75-GBP80 pledge. This has changed significantly in the past couple of years, production costs have gone up enormously, transportation costs have gone up enormously, 21% on your KS commitments, etc. It wouldn’t surprise me that KS (crowdfunding) is slowly falling because prices are rising relatively and with it your risk.
