More than 12,000 runners, walkers and wheelchair competitors cross the finish line each year at the Dallas Marathon and Half Marathon, which features a completely redesigned course for the 2018 edition.
The vast majority of participants in this race make it to the half marathon (over 9,800 in 2012), as the 2013 race had to be canceled due to bad weather. For this year’s race, participants had 4 hours to complete their 13.1 miles.
The full and half marathon share the same starting line in downtown Dallas on Young Street at the Dallas Police Memorial near City Hall. From there, the route follows a very gradual climb for the first few miles, with a wider downhill segment between two and three miles at Olive Street and Cedar Spring Road.
Thereafter, the next two kilometers keep cyclists along Turtle Creek, continuing the climb through the posh Highland Park neighborhood of Dallas. This segment is where the highest elevation of the half marathon course occurs, on Longview Street between miles 7 and 8. By this point in the race, runners will have climbed nearly 180 feet in less than four miles.
Once you pass mile 8, it is almost always downhill from there. Long stretches along Greenville Avenue, Swiss Avenue and Main Street are followed by the final stretch along Canton and Young Street to the finish at the Dallas Police Memorial.
In the Dallas metropolitan area, moderately cool to mild (and sometimes cold) weather conditions are the norm in late fall and early winter, when the weather is often the most pleasant for the region.
In December, temperatures range from 39 ° F to 57 ° F, while the average rainfall is around 2.53 inches for the month. On race day (December 12), the average minimum is 40 ° F and the maximum is 58 ° F.
In the women’s race Yanet Castro Aguilar won in 2h52’21 ». She preceded the Americans Lindsey Bradley, 2nd in 2h52’47 ”and Kelsie Warrel, 3rd in 2h54’21”.
Among the men, Joseph Hale won in 2h28’42 ». The podium was 100% American, ahead of fellow countrymen Joseph Darda, second with a time of 2h29’15 ”and Jordan English, who completed the podium by crossing the finish line in 2h36’45”.
