The iconic Hollywood sign in Los Angeles is renewed. The meter-high letters that dominate the heart of the American film industry will celebrate their centennial in 2023. From Monday, the nine plates will be thoroughly washed and painted.
The Hollywood sign was erected in 1923 on the famous Los Angeles hill. At first it wasn’t Hollywood, but Hollywoodland. It was intended as an advertisement for a new residential complex to be built nearby.

In 1949, as the film industry entered its golden age, the last four letters were removed and the sign became the face of Hollywood.

Over the years, the Hollywood sign has had more maintenance. In 1978, the landmark, popular with tourists, was even completely rebuilt. The letters were last given a new coat of paint in 2012.
