If Putin dies or leaves office suddenly, the Council of the Russian Federation will hold presidential elections within 14 days.
If the Federation Council cannot do so, the task will be transferred to the General Electoral Commission.
At the same time, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin will become interim president.
Some observers consider Putin’s successor the vice president of the security council of the Russian federation, Dmitry Medvedev.
Medvedev was President of Russia from 2008 to 2012. He was also Prime Minister from 2012 to 2020.
“Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev is a Russian politician who has been vice president of the Russian Security Council since 2020,” international relations analyst Suzie Sudarman told reporters. CNNIndonesia.comto the question of who was Putin’s successor, Thursday (15/9).
However, other observers say that so far no one knows who Putin’s successor will be.
“Basically nobody knows [siapa penerus Putin]. If someone starts with Medvedev as a successor, it will look like a political attack on him, “political analyst Tatiana Stanovaya told reporters. Al JazeeraMonday (9/12).
Stanavaya said no one wanted to appear as a successor because it would make their position vulnerable.
It is difficult to find a replacement for Putin
Security expert Mark Galeotti admits it’s hard to find a replacement for Putin to become Russia’s number one.
“Of all the sick speculations, there is no evidence of him [Putin] seriously ill, and chased him out of the war, “Galeotti said.
Then he said: “I cannot judge him to withdraw unless the people around him force him to do so.”
On the other hand, observers also estimate that the 69-year-old man could have sat in power for up to 10 years or even more if he wanted to.
Analysts also believe that Putin’s departure from presidential office is really due to the coercion of those close to him.
“If anything happens to him tomorrow, I’m sure the system will stay. It will be solid,” Stanovaya said.
Furthermore, he explained that the peacekeeping force, the siloviki, would begin to take matters into their own hands.
“However, if something were to happen to Putin at a later date, in a year or two, the risk of destabilization would be even greater,” says Stanavoya.
He also said that the public would see the showdown, while siloviki would have less chance to defend his initiative.
“Next year the situation may be more different and more difficult,” Stanavoya added.
Another evaluation came from Suzie. If Putin suddenly dies, Russia has a heavy economic burden.
