the rebirth of Juan Tito Rendon in cycling it causes admiration, joy and inspiration.

A year ago, as he struggled to recover from fractures sustained in a car accident, he came close to retiring from high-performance sport after feeling his efforts to get back into the saddle hadn’t paid off.

However, at the worst moment of his sporting career, he had enough strength to move forward, so much so that he is now part of the privileged group that will represent Colombia in the Road World Championships which will begin in Wollongong, Australiathis weekend.

hard test

On February 26, 2021, Juan Tito, a full-fledged rider defending himself on various terrains, had a motorcycle accident on his way home after a routine workout. He fractured the tibia, fibula and calcaneus of his right foot and the humerus and collarbone of his left arm.

The blows he suffered were so severe that he was hospitalized for two and a half months. Ten days after he was discharged, he was taken back to the hospital for an infection in one of his fractures. There it lasted 25 days.

“I remember leaving in a wheelchair, but motivated to return to therapy to regain mobility. I lost a lot of muscle mass. Imagine that from 52 kilos before that accident, I went to 37 ”, says the cyclist, born 22 years ago in Jardín, Antioquia.

Halfway through the healing process, in September of the same year he was informed during a medical examination that his left arm had been fractured again and he had to return to the operating room.

“At that moment morale dropped to the ground and I thought about retiring. I got away from the bike a bit because I was preparing a lot to get back to racing as soon as possible ”.

does not give up

However, Rendón did not lower his arms. They operated on him and a few days later he returned to training, with the good news that he was contacted by the leaders of Orgullo Paisa’s team, including Álex Cano, Héctor Manuel Castaño and Jesús Piedrahita to sign it.

“They contacted me and gave me the opportunity to return to professional cycling. All that December I trained hard and in January, a month and a half after my last surgery, I participated in the national road race in Pereira, in which I managed to move the race, integrate the breakaway and be eleventh ” . recalls Rendón, who later set himself the goal of making his mark in Colombia’s most important Under 23 competition, the Vuelta de la Juventud, where he got what he wanted. He finished second, a result that opened the doors for him to join the national team in the World Cup.

“That result filled me with courage to keep fighting for my goals in cycling. I am happy for the call of the breeder Carlos Mario Jaramillo to the national team. When things are done right, the fruits are harvested, ”said Tito, son of Mary Luz Franco, a housewife, and Jhon Jairo Rendón, a coffee and banana farmer in Jardín, southwest of the department.

Tito will arrive at the World Cup loaded with more confidence after recently becoming U-23 champion of the Clásica de El Carmen de Viboral and being sixth among the elite.

“Being part of a Colombian national team in a World Cup is very rewarding, every cyclist’s dream, thank God I was given this opportunity. It is the satisfaction of a duty accomplished that things are going well and that the recovery has been successful. Nobody is free to face something difficult, but it is in the attitude of each person to be able to stand up in the face of adversity ”, said Tito, who faces the appointment in Australia with optimism.

“I have prepared very well and the idea is to have a nice performance, there is enthusiasm and enthusiasm,” said Rendón, an example of self-improvement in cycling.
