As part of the series of presentations by the new professional staff, Baptiste Hermet (23) and Tristan Delestrez (22), video analysts, both engaged in the interview exercise. They tell us about their background, their role within the staff and their organization as a duo.
What are your respective precedents before joining FC Lorient?
Baptiste Hermet, 23 years old from Auvergne : I took a STAPS sports training course. At first I didn’t think about going into video, I was focused on physical preparation. Then, by chaining the internships from my license, I realized that I was passionate about thinking about the game and at the same time I was able to pass my coaching diplomas.
And at the end of my license, I had the opportunity to do a year of work-study at Clermont Foot 63 (Ligue 2) on video, passing my master’s degree in Montpellier. Then, two years ago, FC Lorient contacted me to become a video analyst for the first team. An opportunity that I took. Then, from this year, I was in charge of the video division of FC Lorient.
Tristan Delestrez, 22 years old from Lille : So, after my baccalaureate, I did a year in STAPS physiotherapy. Then I went to psychology college for three years. And during my senior year, I contacted Régis (Le Bris) by email. Regular exchanges, via email and video, followed.
And in my spare time I enjoyed analyzing the matches of the FC Lorient reserve, even his opponents. At the same time, I was at LOSC, where I was an educator with the little ones. I stayed there for 8 years. And before joining FCL, I spent a year with Hazebrouck’s U16 while passing my BE.
Why the video industry in particular?
Baptist Hermet : So my first goal was to work in professional football. I realized very early on that the profession of a professional coach would be difficult to achieve, especially since I was not playing at a high level. So I focused on a new position. A post that emerges. Video. This is an increasingly exploited sector in football.
Tristan Destrez : Basically, I’m a football fanatic. And I’ve always been a tactician. I really like the theory. And entering the video, I wanted to understand why some things didn’t work, others did… It was more personal enrichment in the beginning.
And the key to progress was therefore to keep watching the meetings. Acquire information, knowledge.
Can you describe your position, your specific missions?
Baptist Hermet : You should know that the missions of this position are personnel dependent. For my part, I have known two brackets, two different methods. This season I take care of the whole part of the opponent analysis. In particular I have to do some montages on their strengths, their weaknesses, the opportunities in relation to our game project …
I also work in collaboration with the data, to link the statistics to the video. And so I also have a managerial part of the video division with Tristan (Delestrez) and Simon (Guillou) in training.
Tristan Destrez: I am responsible for our entire team. Our model, our tactics … I am present at all training sessions, I code the sessions with a sure-footed step … But I am still in a period of adaptation on certain things. There will be a lot more analysis later.
And on match day, what are your roles?
Baptist Hermet : We are still traveling as a couple this year. For my part, the goal is to allow live video feedback from the sidelines to make tactical changes live and at range. The goal is to link the video image to the comments and instructions of the staff. But we want to go further, we are only at the beginning of our analyzes.
Tristan Destrez: On the day of the game I am in the stands with many competition programs at my disposal. I put all of this on my computer, coding on the software. And I give feedback to Baptiste, the staff.
What is the video for within the new staff?
Baptist Hermet : The peculiarity of this start of the season is that we present few images to the players, but they must be meaningful and precise. And each image must carry an idea. We target specific sequences. And our analysis methodology is always the same, regardless of the opponent. With the aim of thwarting it, and we of existing.
What is the player feedback?
Baptist Hermet : I had some concerns at first, especially about feedback from older people. But ultimately, gamers enjoy those video moments. After that, it’s up to us not to load the programs too much. But the group is very demanding of information, of individual videos …
