Meta’s social network will offer a new way to communicate to its 3 billion users. Called “Community Chats”, this feature is inspired by Discord, a popular platform for streamers and gamers.
It is not the first time that Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger have been “inspired” by the competition. And it was only a matter of time before Discord became an inspiration.
The idea of Community Chats is therefore to group users around topics, and allow them to discuss with each other. Of course, audio and video chats are included and groups can be managed by administrators.
The administrators will also take care of the discussions, even the tools will be at their disposal to avoid any overflow. This will include lists of words or phrases that will be banned and immediately eliminated. They will also be able to block, silence or suspend slightly heated individuals.
If you are a Discord user, this is nothing new. It remains to be seen whether Meta’s “new” features will be able to seduce users. Especially when we know that younger people are increasingly deserting social media, in favor of alternatives such as Snapchat and especially TikTok.
