Over the next few years, the Netherlands will receive € 413 million from the European Social Fund (ESF) to support people in vulnerable employment and to fight poverty. The program that the Netherlands has for this has been approved by the European Commission. For the first time, the government is also making European funds available for food aid.

The fund can be used to train workers and help beneficiaries to find work. Of the 413 million euros, 270 million will go to municipalities and sector funds, which provide further training and guidance on other jobs.

“We help employers fill their vacancies. We also ensure adequate food supply for people in need and help children growing up in poverty,” said Minister Schouten for Policy, Participation and Pensions of poverty. “Certainly at this time, when an increasing number of people are experiencing difficulties due to rising prices, these resources are very welcome.”

Food aid and toiletries

For the first time, European money is now also being made available for food aid and the fight against child poverty. This is an amount of almost € 16 million, which should be used for food aid from the beginning of next year. That money can also go to, for example, children’s school supplies, menstruation products, and other toiletries.

Funds from the ESF are intended for the period up to and including 2027. Non-profit organizations can submit grant applications from next month.
