Dozens of cars destroyed in a major fire on a freight train

On Wednesday afternoon, a fire broke out on a freight train in Etten-Leur carrying passenger cars. The fire is now under control. However, there is still a lot of damage to the track and the pipeline above the track. That’s why there are no more trains on the route between Breda and Roosendaal for the rest of the day.

Several cars on the train were on fire. According to ProRail, these are hybrid cars. The cars are on two levels of the train. Many fire trucks were called out. A police helicopter flew over the fire site.

Powered by overhead line
ProRail quickly disconnected power from overhead cables and quickly sent employees in this direction. By quickly shutting off the power, more serious damage would have been avoided, such as in the Lelystad-Dronten section, where things went wrong on 2 September.

ProRail reports that there will be no more trains on this route for the remainder of Wednesday. The NS uses buses. The extra travel time between Breda and Roosendaal is half an hour.

Vossendaal closed
The train would be bound for Vlissingen Sloehaven. There were no passengers on the train. The fire was limited to a few cars on the freight train and did not spread further after 2pm.

The road on which the track on which the train is stopped is stationary, the Vossendaal, is closed to traffic. A lot of smoke was released during the fire. People nearby have been warned to stay away from that smoke.
