New research on the Teutonic Order

For nearly 300 years, the Teutonic Order ruled its possessions in Central Europe from Mergentheim. From 20 September to 16 October, a round table discussion will be held at the Residenzschloss Bad Mergentheim on a little-known topic in the history of the Order: “Battles of the Teutonic Order in the Southeast. New aspects of the history of Ballei and subsequent events in the Middle Ages and in modern times “. The following information was taken from a press release from the public relations agency for culture and contents of the State Gazette.

New research on the Teutonic Order

The exhibition shows the history of the possessions of the Teutonic Order between the Czech Republic and Cyprus. The Residenzschloss Mergentheim was the seat of the Teutonic Order in Central Europe for nearly 300 years. The mighty palace complex shows the importance of the order, which ruled and administered its possessions from here.

The Teutonic Order was founded during the Third Crusade (1189–1192). The knights were given houses, mills, churches, hospitals and even rights throughout Europe. The panel exhibition illuminates the Order’s possessions, which were located in the south-east of present-day Germany, and thus shows new, previously little-known aspects of the Order’s history.

In the footsteps of the Knights of the Order

The exhibition shows on twelve panels the possessions of the Teutonic Order between Central Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. The history of the knights of the order in today’s Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Italy, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus is shown and supported from images. The exhibition of panels thus follows the path of the pilgrims and crusaders who made the journey to Jerusalem in the 13th century.

Research Center of the University of Würzburg

The show was developed by the Research Center of the German Order. Since the founding of the research center at the Franconian Regional History Chair at the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg in 2014, a collaboration has been initiated with the Museum of the Teutonic Order, now Mergentheim Palace. The research center produces results that serve the work of the Museum of the Teutonic Order in the Mergentheim Palace. Symposia, conferences and special exhibitions on the Teutonic Order are held jointly.
