The agents discovered a 4-year-old girl, a 7-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl near the water’s edge on the beach, known for its boardwalk and giant Ferris wheel.
At around 01:30 EDT (0530 GMT), police responded to a call to a Brooklyn apartment from a concerned family member who claimed a parent may have harmed their three young children, the head of the school said. police, Kenneth Corey.
In the building, police met with the father of one of the children, who expressed similar concerns, Mr. Corey said at a press conference on Coney Island.
“He said he believed his wife and kids were on the boardwalk here,” Corey said.
The agents who searched the area found the mother of the children, 30, barefoot and wet. She was accompanied by other family members, but not as children, Corey said.
“The research has now intensified … aircraft units, port units and further investigations of the coast,” he said.
At around 4:45 am (0845 GMT), officers found the unconscious children on the beach and rushed them to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. The mother was then taken to a police station where she was questioned by investigators, Corey said.
“So far he hasn’t said anything,” he said.
