Many media outlets at the time claimed that Xena and Gabrielle were more than just friends. They are called lesbians. Lucy Lawless also spoke to Stellar magazine about the assessment.

Although never explicitly stated in the series, Lucy has confirmed that the couple are lesbian. They are in love.
