Tigray rebels ready to cease fire after the outbreak of violence

The rebels in the Ethiopian region of Tigray say they are ready to lay down their arms again. They also say they want to participate in peace negotiations led by the African Union. The rebels have been fighting against the country’s government for about two years and the violence resurfaced at the end of last month after a period of calm that lasted months.

The Ethiopian government did not immediately respond to the request, but said it was open to peace negotiations. The United Nations claims to support peace negotiations. Secretary General Antonio Guterres calls on both sides to take this opportunity to end the violence forever.

The rebels are led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which has ruled the country for years. This ended in 2018 with the election of Abiy Ahmed as Prime Minister. Two years ago, tensions erupted between those parts and civil war broke out.

Other countries have also been involved in the conflict. Valid from March a file which was unilaterally proclaimed by Abiy and to which TPLF accepted. The parties blame each other for the recent violence.

Millions of people in northern Ethiopia have been displaced since the violence broke out. Thousands are died from the violence, others died of famine.
