A secretary chook was born in Diergaarde Blijdorp. According to the Rotterdam Zoo, it is the 1st start of bird species in the park.
In early July, a pair of birds laid three eggs, which were then moved to an incubator. “The birds are in an aviary with other birds of prey, this kind of as vultures and helmeted guinea fowl,” says a chook expert from Diergaarde Blijdorp. “You never want other birds to peck your eggs. Which is why we moved them to an incubator.”
One of the three eggs is positioned in the nest just just before hatching. A 2nd egg turned out to be unfertilized, the 3rd embryo died in the incubator. In accordance to Diergaarde Blijdorp, the new child chicken flies in November.
The birds are native to Africa and are threatened with extinction. Their habitat on the continent continues to drop owing to, among the other items, deforestation. The foods of the species differs from that of other birds of prey. Secretary birds, for instance, do not consume rabbits or poultry, but generally bugs and rodents. Their legs are also longer. They can use it to score large kicks.
