Serena Williams’ great show at the US Open is over: the US tennis icon lost her third round duel on Saturday night (September 3, 2022 / CEST) against Australian Ajla Tomljanović 5: 7, 7: 6 (7 : 4), 1: 6 and most likely said goodbye to the sports stage.
Around 24,000 fans at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium greeted 40-year-old Williams after more than three hours of play. As she thanked her family, the 23-time Grand Slam winner could no longer hold back her tears. “These are tears of joy, I think,” said the American. “It was a fun trip. I’m just grateful.”

Williams leaves the backdoors open
Immediately after his release, he told of a possible return to the field: “I don’t think so, but you never know. I don’t know.” At her planned farewell tournament, Williams had previously raised vague hopes of her 24th Grand Slam title with two startling wins, with which she could equal Australia’s Margaret Court all-time record. Williams announced her retirement a few weeks ago. The day before she had already been eliminated with her sister Venus Williams in what was probably their last joint professional appearance in doubles.
Medvedev defeats the Chinese Wu
In the men’s category, reigning champion Daniil Medvedev continues to be in top form as the Russian world number one beat Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing 6: 4, 6: 2, 6: 2 in the third round. Wu is the first Chinese professional player to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. A very difficult task awaits Medvedev in the second round: Nick Kyrgios. The Australian Wimbledon finalist also had no problems in winning 6: 4, 6: 2, 6: 3 against American Jeffrey John Wolf.
Jabeur in the second round
Ons Jabeur is for the first time in the round of 16 of the US Open. The 28-year-old Tunisian won a close match in the third round on Friday against local hero Shelby Rogers 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Number five on the seeding list has already achieved her 41st touring win this season, only world number one Iga Swiatek has even more with 52 hits.
The next success story after Wimbledon?
For the past three years, Jabeur had failed in the third round in New York, now he has bigger plans for his run from Wimbledon. On the “sacred lawn” Jabeur was the first African to reach the final of a Grand Slam.
Murray is still waiting for the first round of 16 from 2017
In the men’s competition, Scotsman Andy Murray was eliminated in the third round. The 35-year-old lost 4-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) and 3-6 to number 13 of Italian seed Matteo Berrettini at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Since 2017, former world number one Murray, who plays with an artificial hip joint from an operation three years ago, has been waiting for a place in the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament. Before that, the Scotsman had managed to do it 38 times in his career.
Easy Gauff in the second round
Late on Friday evening, Coco Gauff won the American third round duel against Madison Keys in two quick sets 6: 2, 6: 3. It is the first time the 18-year-old has reached the second week of the tournament in Flushing Meadows. The game was quickly decided.
At first they both had problems in an overall manageable game in terms of level. Coco Gauff was able to correct her mistakes better than her opponent Madison Keys (avoidable mistakes 14:22) and has largely dominated the rallies. With Keys particularly struggling to hold his serve games, it wasn’t a more exciting game.
Krawietz / Mies miss the round of 16 in doubles
Two-time Grand Slam winners Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies missed the round of 16. The 30-year-old from Coburg and his two-year-old partner from Cologne lost in the second round in New York to Robin Haase / Philipp Oswald (Netherlands / Austria) 6-7 (4-7), 7- 6 (7-4) , 3rd place: 6.
