Sambo comes from the word SAMooborona Bez Oruzhiya which means self-defense without weapons. In essence, Sambo is a free fight similar to wrestling.
Punch and kick techniques until the lock is on Sambo. Specifically regarding the lock, Sambo targets the opponent’s leg to be locked and a moment later he is killed in a lower battle.
Meanwhile, since 2013, Putin has publicly stated his desire for Sambo to be included in the sporting event category at the Olympics.
“Hopefully one day Sambo will enter the Olympics. This sport has crossed Russia and is loved by many athletes in the world,” he explained as quoted from sambo.sport.
“It’s a really beautiful and dynamic type of sport that co-opts a lot of combat sports,” he continued.
Regarding the proposal as a sport at the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) aka the Olympic committee granted it in 2018.
Prior to entering the Olympics, Sambo actually started worldwide when a number of fighters used this technique in MMA. One of them is UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov who is famous for his ‘crocodile grip’ leg lock.
The Russian fighter also wore a shirt that read ‘If Sambo is easy, then it’s called Jiujitsu’.
It should be noted that Sambo was originally used by Russian soldiers on the battlefield in the 1920s, especially in close combat. Sambol aims to take down opponents more quickly and efficiently.
