Writer Salman Rushdie stabbed on stage in New York state

British writer Salman Rushdie was stabbed just before a lecture he was due to give in Chautauqua, about 470 kilometers from New York City. Nothing is known about the perpetrator yet. He has been arrested.

Police say Rushdie sustained a stab wound to his neck. It is not yet clear how he is doing, the police report in a first written statement. He was transported to a hospital in a stretcher by helicopter.

Born in 1947 in India, Ahmed Salman Rushdie became infamous in the world of radical Muslims for his book The Satanic Verses against which Muslims stopped mass demonstrations in 1988.

A year later, the then spiritual leader in Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, outlawed Rushdie and called for his assassination.

Rushie, who had gone to study and live in England, went into hiding for ten years and received permanent protection from the British police. At least one attempt was made to kill him with a failed bomb attack.
