Climate change will increase the death rate six times, study says. According to the study published in Lancet, excessive heat can cause the death rate to rise. A study conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina in the US also shows that the ambient temperature at night affects sleep. Studies have also found that poor sleep impairs the immune system and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, chronic diseases and mental disorders. By 2090, nighttime temperatures in 28 cities in East Asia will rise from 20.4 degrees Celsius to 39.7 degrees Celsius. It disturbs sleep and excessive heat can cause other diseases.
The researchers also point out that changes in average daily temperatures may increase mortality rates more than currently predicted. Yuqiang Zhang, a climate scientist at the University of North Carolina, said the risks of rising temperatures at night are often overlooked. According to the study, the frequency and average intensity of hot nights will increase by 30 and 60 percent, respectively, by 2100. The team also calculated heat-related deaths in 28 cities in China, South Korea and Japan between 1980 and 2015. Between 2016 and 2100, the risk of dying from excessively hot nights will increase sixfold, the researchers found.
This projection is much higher than the daily average heat-related death tolls suggested by climate change models. The researchers also found that regional differences in temperature also contribute to variations in nighttime temperatures. The study pointed out that regions with the lowest average temperatures have the greatest potential for warming. The researchers also suggest that the government should design effective ways to combat health problems following climate change. Nighttime air temperature levels should also be taken into account when designing future heatwave warning systems.
