More electric buses to NYC; the MTA will receive more than 200

The MTA will receive a $116 million grant to purchase more than 200 new battery electric buses.

The funding comes from bipartisan infrastructure legislation enacted last November.

“This is big for New York:

“The MTA will receive $116 million from @USDOT for clean electric buses from our infrastructure law,” Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer wrote in a social media post commenting on a story about our sister station NY1.

“This will propel the MTA toward a clean energy future and reduce carbon emissions from dirty diesel in New York City neighborhoods,” the Senate leader’s message continues.

The MTA plans to use the money to first replace buses at the Kingsbridge depot in the Bronx.

After that, buses from other depots in the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens will be replaced.

The new buses are expected to arrive in 2025.
