Renowned avant-garde fashion designer and innovator Issey Miyake has died in a hospital in Tokyo at the age of 84.

The Japanese designer, known for his wrinkle-free pleats and Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs’ signature black turtleneck, died Tuesday. He was 84 years old.

Miyake rose to prominence in the 1970s, when his work was defined over the years by technological design, bold, colorful styles, and origami-like folds. The latter earned him the title “Prince of Folds”.

After studying graphic design at the Tokyo University of Art, he studied fashion design in Paris where he worked with celebrity fashion designers Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy before heading to New York. In 1970 he returned to Tokyo and founded the Miyake design studio.

In the late 1980s, he developed a new way of pleating by wrapping fabrics between layers of paper and placing them in a heat press while the garment retains its pleated shape. This led to the development of his signature line “Pleats, Please”.

He eventually created over a dozen fashion lines, ranging from his core Issey Miyake line for men and women to handbags, watches and perfumes, before retiring in 1997 to devote himself to research.

To create his clothes, Miyake worked with materials ranging from plastic to metal, as well as adding traditional Japanese materials and paper.
