Tennis star Serena Williams: Start-ups instead of trophies

SErena Williams has been haunted for several years by the question of when she would end her tennis career, much like Roger Federer, who is almost the same age. The answer has long remained open, but Williams has made it increasingly clear in recent times that she is working on a career off the tennis court. The strongest signal came in March when she announced a corporate milestone. She said the venture capital firm she founded, Serena Ventures, had raised money from outside investors on a large scale for the first time, totaling $111 million.

And she has now spoken extensively about this entrepreneurial project when she announced her imminent departure from professional tennis in a guest article for the magazine “Vogue”. The focus of her life has slowly shifted to Serena Ventures recently, she wrote. “Each morning I look forward to walking down the stairs to my office and doing Zoom meetings to see presentations from companies we might invest in.” She’ll have even more time to do that in the future. Instead of chasing tennis trophies, she can focus more on finding potential unicorns, i.e. startups that will one day be worth billions.
