After firing a salvo, the crew hides the weapon system among trees and broken branches. They say Russian forces are using drones to hunt down highly effective howitzers that have forced Russian artillery back to positions further from the front line.
One of the advantages of this German self-propelled howitzer is its rate of fire. It finds a target and deals with it about twice as fast as equivalent Soviet-era artillery.
At the beginning of August, Germany handed over 10 howitzers to Ukrainian forces, while the Netherlands – 8.
“I had a lot more work with the old artillery systems. I had to use a compass, manually set the coordinates for the gun, calculate the position, calculate the modification. This gun does it all automatically. He calculates himself, aims himself, shoots himself,” says the soldier.
To master the new weapon system, Ukrainian soldiers were trained in Germany.
After firing a salvo, the crew hides the weapon system as Russian forces hunt the howitzers with drones, as they have a significant impact on the course of the war.
“We have noticed that since we got these weapons, enemy artillery is less confident than when we used Soviet artillery. You can see that they have withdrawn their artillery. Before, they felt in complete control here. Their fire was more intense. Since we received these, not only self-propelled howitzer, but also other NATO weapon systems, enemy fire is less intense. They shoot less often and in smaller numbers,” says the soldier.
Manufacturers report that such weapon systems will still be delivered to Ukraine. The German government has given permission to produce 100 Howitzer 2000 for the needs of Ukraine, but the German media reports that the fulfillment of an order of this size would take several years.
