Putin’s meeting with Erdogan caused a stir in NATO – Pushkov

The talks between Russian and Turkish Presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi have caused great concern in the North Atlantic Alliance. This opinion was expressed by Senator Alexei Pushkov.

“The talks between Putin and Erdogan, and not in a third country, but in the residence of the President of Russia in Sochi, certainly brought qualitatively new moments to the situation. And for this reason, they caused a noticeable commotion in the capitals of NATO countries, ” — says the representative of the Federation Council.

He also noted that Erdogan, as the leader of the country of the North Atlantic Alliance, undermined NATO’s strategy to isolate Russia with his trip. In his opinion, the visit of the Turkish leader to Russia significantly changed the situation that unfolded on the world stage after the start of the special operation in Ukraine.

“Firstly, the visit of the leader of a NATO country to Russia undermines the Western strategy of isolating Russia. If such isolation is opposed not only by China, India or Argentina, but also by an important member of the Western alliance, this means that the West has failed in its policy of isolation. And the whole political world sees it.” — he wrote in his telegram channel.

In addition, the senator added, during the negotiations between the leaders, very important agreements were reached, “exploding the policy of sanctions.”

“Negotiations should be assessed precisely by the bilateral component, because it is here – in the field of trade, the transition to national currencies in mutual settlements, the recognition of the Mir payment system – that the long-term interests of Turkey and Russia coincide today. The meeting in Sochi showed that the two leaders intend to seriously expand cooperation on this basis,” Pushkov concluded.
