KOMPAS.com – Astronomical phenomena often steal the imagination’s attention.
Recently, news about the phenomenon of the distance of the Sun getting further away from Earth has become a topic of discussion.
This information comes after news that the Earth had rotated faster than it should, causing the days to be shorter.
So is it true that the Sun is getting further away from Earth?

An astronomer and astrophysicist at the Center for Space Research of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Thomas Djamaluddin denied information about the distance the Sun is said to be getting further away from Earth.
According to him, the distance between the Sun and the Earth not getting further away. However, there are times when the distance between the Sun and Earth becomes close or vice versa.
“The distance between the Earth and the Sun is not getting further away,” said Thomas, when contacted by Kompas.com, Monday (8/8/2022).
Meanwhile, the distance between the Sun and the Earth is affected by the Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
“The mummy’s orbit around the sun is oval in shape. There is the closest distance, the farthest distance,” he added.
The Earth’s closest distance around the Sun is 147 million kilometers (km). The Earth’s furthest distance from the Sun is 152 million km.
The phenomenon of the Earth being at its furthest position from the Sun is called aphelion.

The impact of the aphelion phenomenon
The aphelion phenomenon where the point of Earth’s orbit is farthest from the Sun has no impact on Earth’s climate.
“Absolutely no impact. Info on perihelion or aphelion on social media is a lot of hoaxes,” said Thomas.
Previously, information about the aphelion phenomenon was often shared on social media.
The information links the aphelion phenomenon which causes temperatures on Earth to become colder.
However, according to Thomas and the Meteorology, Climatography and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) statement, that information is not true.

Aphelion at a glance
Quoted from Almanacaphelion is the state when the Earth’s orbital point is farthest from the Sun.
The point in Earth’s orbit that is closest to the Sun is called perihelion.
These two terms come from the Ancient Greek, namely helios means “Sun” and apo means “far,” as well as peri means “near”.
The difference between the two orbital point distances is caused by the Earth’s orbit to the Sun which has an elliptical or oval-shaped path.
The aphelion phenomenon always occurs in early July. About two weeks after the June solstice at which the Earth is furthest from the sun.
While perihelion occurs in early January or about two weeks after the December solstice. At that time, the Earth was closest to the Sun.
In 2022, aphelion occurs starting July 4 at 03:10 Eastern Time. Earth will be 94,509,598 miles from the Sun.
While perihelion occurs on January 4 at 01:52 Eastern Time where the Earth is 91.406,842 miles from the Sun.
