La Milonga del angel, mother house of tango in Nîmes, is organizing the 25th Summer of Argentine Tango. The international festival will be held in various emblematic places in the city of Antonins, at Pont du Gard and even in Aubais, from August 10 to 16.
Nimes or Buenos Aires? From August 10 to 16, the jerky rhythm of the tango will float in the air at the Maison Carrée, the Place d’Assas or the Place du Chapitre, which have become veritable suburbs (mythical places of tango) for a week. La Milonga del angel, temple of Latin dance, has concocted a rich program to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the international tango festival with dignity.
The film Pichuco, which depicts the work of composer Aníbal Troilo will open the ball. His grandson, Fransisco A.Torné, will bear witness to the treasure bequeathed by his grandfather. “It’s like receiving Mozart’s grandson for us”, confides Félix Akli, one of the founders of the Milonga del angel. Several film sessions will be organized in the cool, such as – among others – the documentaries a shot in the night I and II, by Alejandro Diez. The director offers an immersion in the streets and neighborhoods of the Argentine capital.

A dive into the universe
The milongas (balls) will not refresh the early evening. Until nightfall, novices and enthusiasts can take to the dance floor, accompanied by a partner. After a pitching (nod of the head to invite to dance), everyone will be able to test the steps, from the sweep au sin passing through the Broken. All accompanied by the notes of the bandoneon, an instrument often called “the soul of tango”. Nine introductory courses are also offered throughout the week with seasoned dancers (Eva Laura, Valeria Maside, Pablo Moyano…). Because the tango can also be listened to, all the milongas are accompanied by internationally known orchestras or in full swing, from Hyperion Ensemble to Cristal Tangos. In addition to demonstrations by maestros, such as those by Paola and Leonardo Auza.
For the more timid, don’t panic: “The most important thing is to take the first step. We also want to share our passion with those who don’t know anything about it”, says Felix Akli. For the artistic director, the tango unites. “This genre is the product of a cultural mix. Like what, there is something positive about immigration”he jokes.
