Sydney (Australia), Aug 8 (EFE).- The Australian Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, asked this Monday to “lower the temperature” in the tensions between China and the United States, which increased after the visit to Taiwan last week of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
“The most important thing right now is for the temperature to cool down and calm to be restored when it comes to tensions across the (Taiwan) Strait,” Wong told a news conference in Canberra, alongside his Taiwanese counterpart. Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.
“The region is concerned about the risk of conflict,” Wong said, saying Australia stands by its “one China policy.”
Wong also called for calm after the Beijing Embassy in Canberra branded as “absolutely unacceptable” the condemnation made last Friday by Australia, the United States and Japan to the military maneuvers in the Taiwan Strait.
In recent days, the Chinese military has simulated military attacks against Taiwan and its naval forces, with live fire and the launch of long-range missiles around the island, in retaliation for Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei last week.
This Monday, the Chinese authorities announced that they will prolong the military maneuvers around Taiwan for one more day, which have been described by the island’s government as “irresponsible” and have raised numerous signs of concern in the international community.
In addition to the military exercises, Beijing announced several sanctions against Pelosi and her direct relatives, and suspended various cooperation mechanisms with the United States.
For his part, the Latvian minister considered that the nations must “work together” to avoid excessive reactions and the occurrence of “another regional or global conflict”, alluding to the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24. EFE
