Haaland opened his scoring account for City already in the first half. He wanted to go around goalkeeper Alphonse Areola in the home team’s penalty area and he fouled him. Haaland then safely converted the penalty kick himself in the 36th minute with a shot on the ground to the right post – 0:1. Areola came on the field only seven minutes earlier, replacing the injured Lukasz Fabianski.
City had a clear territorial advantage from the start, but they did not get chances and Kevin De Bruyne’s goal in the 28th minute was ruled out for offside. Haaland secured the victory for the guests in the 65th minute, after a great vertical shot from De Bruyne’s defense, he didn’t hesitate alone in front of the goalkeeper – 0:2. The Norwegian striker left the field in the 78th minute, West Ham failed to dramatize the end with a contact hit and came up empty-handed in the first round.
New coach Erik ten Hag’s debut on the Manchester United bench did not go well, his team lost 1:2 at home to Brighton. German midfielder Pascal Gross was largely responsible for Brighton’s three-point catch at Old Trafford. In the 30th minute, he capitalized on a pass from Danny Welbeck in front of an open goal, and nine minutes later he finished off a quick break when Solly March’s shot hit the back of the net.
The Hag tried to stir up the stagnant offensive waters shortly after the break when he sent Cristiano Ronaldo to the turf. The home team managed to reduce the score in the 68th minute, when Alexis Mac Allister inadvertently scored an own goal after a corner in an attempt to deflect the ball to safety – 1:2. In the next course, however, the “red devils” could not create pressure that would result in an equalization.
Leicester City did not maintain a two-goal lead and only drew 2:2 with Brentford on their home turf. In the 86th minute, Josh Dasilva tied the score.
