Kamaruddin Simanjuntak, lawyer for Brigadier Nofriansyah Yoshua Hutabarat (Brigadir J) revealed that the autopsy results of Brigadier J’s brain had moved to the stomach. This later became the public spotlight. What was the autopsy process like until the brain found in the stomach?
dr Budi Sampurna, a forensic medicine expert from the University of Indonesia, explained that basically there are various ways and customs in the autopsy process, for example looking at religion and traditions. Generally in Indonesia, body tissue is returned to its original place after an autopsy.
It’s different in countries like Germany, America, and the Netherlands, it’s fairly common for the brain to be placed in the abdominal area after an autopsy. This is to prevent seepage from the cut marks on the skull when the brain melts later.

“If they finish doing the autopsy, the brain will not be returned to the head. Why not put it back in the head? Because the head has been cut off. If the brain melts, then it can seep into it and come out,” he explained when contacted by detik.com, Tuesday (2/8/2022).
“That’s why they said, in us, we don’t put it back into the head, but the head will be covered like cotton, or there is a special kind of paper that is put there. Then cut the skull again and it can be closed,” continued Dr Budi.
Furthermore, Dr. Budi explained that in Indonesia, skull cutting is done in a certain way so that when the brain is returned to the head area in a lying position, the fluid can be accommodated.
“The head was cut off. The way to cut it, if we use it, is to make an elbow so that later when we put it back, it will remain and can accommodate the brain when he is lying down,” he added.
“In other countries like Germany, he just cuts it straight from front to back like a hat. So, later when he returns there his brain is then closed, then this bone will slide. If it becomes liquid, it will come out, seep,” explained Dr. Budi.
He also emphasized that each country can have different procedures regarding how to restore body tissue after the autopsy process. Only in some countries, it is normal for the brain to be placed in the abdomen after an autopsy to prevent the fluid from seeping out.
