If you were to disappear quickly into the crowd without being noticed – after doing something illegal – which car would you choose?
Many crooks and bandits have asked themselves that question. After a break-in, whether it is a robbery of a bank, shop or other form of theft, the perpetrators need to get away from the scene quickly. Preferably without being noticed.
Over the years there have been various favorite cars for this task.
Jaguar and BMW
British criminals in the late 50s and early 60s often chose the Jaguar MK2.
– The classic BMW 2002 was previously a preferred getaway car among criminals.

The German terrorist group Bader-Meinhof, which wreaked havoc in the 70s, very often preferred BMW 2002. Preferably the sprightly Tii edition.
So often did they use it, in fact, that evil tongues claimed that BMW was short for Baader-Meinhof Wagen…
Opel worsting
In the 90s, the Opel Lotus Omega was widely used as a getaway car. It was so fast that the authorities wanted to ban it, while at the same time it was relatively discreet for non-connoisseurs. In its time, this was the world’s fastest sedan.
But right now it seems that the top version of the Audi A6, namely the RS 6 Avant, is most popular.
In any case, that is what the German criminal most often prefers. That’s what the online newspaper writes berlingske.dk, in an article.

– The latest generation Audi RS 6 has 600 horsepower, four-wheel drive and only comes as a station wagon – or Avant, in Audi parlance.

Three times Audi RS 6 in a row
Fortunately, postal and bank robberies have declined sharply, since cash is more or less a thing of the past in large parts of Europe. Card and digital solutions have largely taken over.
But most recently earlier this year, a cash transport was robbed near the airport in Cologne. Getaway car: Audi RS6.
Back in 2018, another money transport was robbed in Berlin. Getaway car: Audi RS6.
In 2019, there was a major jewelery theft in Dresden. Getaway car: Audi RS6.

Fast, discreet and anonymous
– There is little to complain about the driving environment in an Audi RS 6.

The Audi RS 6 exists in several generations. What they all have in common is that they are fast and have quattro four-wheel drive.
The latest generation offers a fresh 600 horsepower and a whopping 800 Nm of torque – from a 4-litre V8 petrol engine.
It does 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Then not many people follow…
Top speed is 250 km/h. It is electronically limited, but it is possible to “unlock” this, so that the car can extend even more…
Mixing with other traffic
The performance is of course part of the explanation why the car is so popular for shady business.
Another factor is that these cars slip quite unnoticed into the traffic picture in Germany, where the A6 is still a very common car.
A third point that is highlighted is that the cars have a large petrol tank, so that you can go far without having to stop.
A somewhat dubious “honour” for the RS 6, is it perhaps still?
