Martinez’s double was key in Boston’s victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Xander Bogaerts had four hits, Alex Verdugo had a pair of doubles and the Boston Red Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-4 on Friday night.

Mexico’s Verdugo had three hits as Boston tied the four-game series at one win apiece. Josh Winckowski (5-5) gave up one run on five hits over five innings for Boston.

Zack Greinke (3-7) gave up four runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings for Kansas City.

The Red Sox got on the scoreboard in the second when former Royals player Eric Hosmer doubled down the right-field line to score Verdugo.

Boston added two more runs in the fourth inning. JD Martínez hit a double that hit the ball against the wall, between left and center fields, to score Bogaerts and Verdugo.

Salvador Pérez hit a 454-foot home run in the fifth inning for Kansas City.

For the Red Sox, the Dominican Rafael Devers 4-0. The Mexican Verdugo 4-3 with two runs scored. The Venezuelan Yolmer Sánchez 3-2.

For the Royals, the Venezuelan Pérez -1 with a run scored and an RBI.
