Three questions about the works at the Ampersand, the Chartres bookstore

L’Esperluète, bookstore in Chartres, launched a major renovation project last spring for premises located in the city centre. Here are three things to know about this work, which is about to end.

The Chartres l’Esperluète bookstore is moving for a few months

1/ What is the opening date?

According to Olivier Lhostis, owner of the bookstore, “every day, the Chartrains come to see me to find out when the bookstore will reopen. Now I can give them a date. It will be August 16. We will be ready for the start of the school year. It couldn’t be possible otherwise. This period is crucial for us, we could not miss it”.

2/ What will it change?

Regulars may not recognize the place at first glance. What first catches the eye is the large central staircase, in the shape of a half-ampersand. It will connect the two floors together.

The other spectacular layout of the site, which will raise your eyes to the ceiling, is this wall of books, which is spread over an entire section of the bookstore.

Its shelves will make it possible to store the very many books that arrive daily. But the floors furthest from the ground will serve primarily as decoration. “I hope we won’t be asked for the books on the highest shelves,” jokes Olivier Lhostis.

The press, previously displayed at the front of the store, will now be placed at the back, opposite the comic book section.

3/ When are we going to celebrate?

L’Amsperluète will celebrate its reopening, but not before November 5th. Why such a discrepancy? “Because in September and October, we will be very busy with the start of the school year”, admits Olivier Lhostis. The program for the evening is under construction.
