Retail turnover in Latvia in June, compared to the corresponding month last year, decreased by 0.8%, which is a slower decline than in the European Union (EU) and the eurozone average, according to the data published by the EU statistical office “Eurostat” on Friday for the 25 member states of the bloc.
The increase in the volume of retail sales in June compared to the sixth month of 2021 decreased in 13 EU countries for which data are available, but the sharpest decrease was recorded in Denmark (-9.5%), Ireland and Germany (both countries -8.8%), as well as in the Netherlands (-6.1%). In Lithuania, the retail turnover in June was 3.5% lower than a year ago, while in Estonia a decrease of 1% was recorded, and the decrease in the retail turnover of Latvia was the smallest of the countries for which data are available.
On the other hand, out of the 12 countries where retail turnover increased year-on-year in June, the fastest increase was in Slovenia (+22.1%), Poland (+9.3%) and Cyprus (+8.4%).
In the EU countries for which data are available, the retail sales turnover in June decreased by 2.8% year-on-year, and in the eurozone countries – by 3.7%.
Meanwhile, compared to the previous month, the volume of retail sales in June fell by 1.3% in the EU, and by 1.2% in the eurozone.
The biggest decrease in monthly terms was in Denmark (-3.8%), the Netherlands (-3.4%) and Estonia (-2.4%). In Lithuania, retail turnover decreased by 1.2%, and in Latvia – by 0.5%. Increases during this period were registered in Ireland and Malta (+0.5% in both countries), Finland (+0.3%) and Austria (+0.2%).
Data are not available for the Czech Republic and Greece.
