Latvia – four gold medals at the European Championship in bench pressing

From August 2 to 7, the European championship in classic and equipped bench press in open, youth, junior and veteran groups will be held in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Almost 700 athletes from 21 countries are participating in the tournament.

Latvia is represented by veteran group athletes in the classic version of the sport. On August 2, our veterans won 4 gold medals. The second oldest participant of the competition, Leonid Anastasjevs, from Daugavpils, brought the first gold medal to Latvia in the 66 kg category of the senior 70+ group (technically 80+). The athlete pressed an 85 kg barbell.

Super heavyweight Dainis Reinholds from Kraków followed in Leonid’s footsteps, winning the next gold medal for Latvia. The result of the song – 175 kg. Attempts to fight for the status of the absolute strongest in the 70+ age group were not successful, we had to settle for the second best absolute place.

The oldest participant of the competition, Viktorija Rumjantseva from Daugavpils, in the 63 kg category of the 70+ (technically 80+) group, won the gold medal in 55 kg.

Tatjana Špakova, who, like Viktorija and Ludmila, calls Daugavpils her home country, won the fourth gold for Latvia in a fierce tactical battle in the 50+ group 63 kg category, recording the figure – 80 kg in the protocols, which ensured another absolute title for Latvia – also the second place.

Ludmila Samoilova, in the 69 kg category of the 50+ group, pressing 72.5 kg, was forced to settle for the fourth place in the competition of 10 participants as a result of a fierce fight.
