Rheine, Ochtrup, WhatsApp fraud among seniors

In both cases, the women supposedly received a WhatsApp message from their daughters. The news always said that they got a new cell phone because the old one was broken. In the further course of the chat, the seniors were asked by their alleged daughters to make transfers because the necessary data was not available on the new cell phone. The 74-year-old from Rheinen then transferred an amount of a good 3,100 euros. The 72-year-old from Ochtrup suffered damage amounting to a good 4,300 euros.
The police continue to warn of this scam. Never respond to requests for money that you receive via messaging or phone calls. Be skeptical. Try to reach the person who is writing to you on the alleged “old” number. Sensitize the people in your environment once again urgently to these WhatsApp messages. And report any attempted fraud to the police.
