Hawley believes the US should not increase its security policy involvement in Europe, reports The Hill.
Hawley becomes the 19th Republican politician in the Senate and the House of Representatives to say no to NATO membership for Sweden and Finland. However, a clear majority of both Republicans and Democrats are in favor of getting the countries into the defense alliance.
The Senate majority leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer, hopes to be able to carry out a vote on the matter by 8 August.
