As reported by Converstation Tuesday (2/8/2022), monkeypox is not a new disease. In the past, this disease was found mostly in endemic areas in Africa such as the Congo, Ghana, and Nigeria, now it has spread to all continents, the majority of which are detected in Europe and North America.
In Asia, cases of monkeypox have been detected in Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Last Saturday, the Indonesian Ministry of Health stated that no cases of monkeypox had been found in Indonesia.
Since early May 2022, more cases of monkeypox have been reported in non-endemic countries. The majority of confirmed cases have a history of travel to countries in Europe and North America.

Data from WHO and health authorities in various countries reported that monkeypox cases were far more outside of the African continent. This is the first time that many cases and clusters of monkeypox have been reported in non-endemic countries and on such a large scale in such a short time.
Of the 528 cases (527 were male) examined between 27 April and 24 June 2022, the study found 98% infected person monkeypox were gay or bisexual men, 75% were white and 41% had a viral infection due to a weakened immune system. The average age of those infected is 38 years.
