Hundreds missing after Kentucky flood, ‘more danger coming’

Floods caused by torrential rains in Kentucky have killed at least 37 people and left hundreds more missing. Four children are also among the dead. Governor Andy Beshear expects the death toll to rise further. Authorities are likely to “find bodies for weeks to come,” he says.

At least 20 inches of rain fell in just two days in parts of Kentucky and western Virginia. Beshear warns of more dangerous weather, with flash flooding and wind causing damage.

Thousands of people have had to leave their homes. About 400 people have been rescued by helicopter.

High-voltage lines have been damaged in all kinds of places and more than 12,000 reports of power outages have been made, according to a website which tracks this for the entire US.

Last week, Beshear declared a state of emergency. And on Friday, President Biden labeled the flood a federal disaster, so that money will be made available from Washington DC for relief and cleaning up the damage.
