Bird flu in the Netherlands: what do you do if you find a dead bird?

If you are walking through nature this summer vacation, you may come across a sick or dead bird. The bird flu is spreading rapidly; never before has the bird flu season been as severe as it is now.

Normally, Natuurmonumenten sees a revival of bird flu, especially in the winter period. Yet there is currently a strong revival of the virus, says Tom Kunzler, policy officer at Natuurmonumenten. “Actually it remains a year-round phenomenon and the breeding colonies are also affected. For example, we had a breeding colony of 6000 Sandwich terns on Texel that was completely wiped out by the bird flu.”
