The roof of a kindergarten is on fire in Niederdorfelden in the Main-Kinzig district. The situation was apparently more dangerous than previously thought.

Update from Monday, August 1st, 11:45 a.m.: It was a shock at noon on Friday when suddenly black clouds of smoke rose above the daycare center on Lindenplatz in Niederdorfelden. The photovoltaic system on the flat roof of the building caught fire. Unlike the first information on Friday afternoon, the situation was very serious. “We were lucky in misfortune,” says Mayor Klaus Büttner in an interview with our editors on Monday morning. The head of the town hall rushed to the day care center at 12.20 p.m. immediately after the emergency services were alerted.

“Parts of the roof fell down into the hallway of the daycare center,” reports Büttner. “The roofing felt and the insulation on the flat roof burned through quite quickly in the area of the skylights over an area of three to four metres. It would be unimaginable if children or teachers had been running down the aisle at that moment.”

Burning daycare roof in the Main-Kinzig district: the building cannot be used for the time being

Around 25 to 30 children were in the building at the time. A group had gone on an excursion. Luckily no one was injured. However, one teacher suffered a shock. “The educators reacted calmly and quickly and took the children outside to safety,” praises Büttner. “The fire brigade also did a good job and were on site quickly.”

Nevertheless, the damage to the roof and the building from the fire and the ingress of extinguishing water is so great that the building cannot be used at first, as Büttner explains. “We now have to wait until an expert from the insurance company was there before further measures can be taken,” explains the mayor. However, the insurance companies are still in the process of clarifying who is responsible for the claims settlement. The photovoltaic system from which the fire apparently started belongs to the Main-Kinzig district works. The building is owned by the municipality of Niederdorfelden. “I hope that this will be clarified in the course of the day,” said Büttner. “This wastes valuable time.”

The trigger for the fire in the photovoltaic system in the Main-Kinzig district is not yet clear

According to Büttner, the Am Lindenplatz daycare center was closed in the second and third week of vacation anyway. But nine children were registered in emergency care, who now had to be accommodated in another facility. “Now the building first has to be dried and ventilated so that the smell of burning goes away,” says Büttner. “I hope that we will be able to resume care in two weeks. But we are already working on a plan B. Because it is not so easy, especially for the U-3 care, we also need sleeping places for the midday rest.”

The expert must determine what actually caused the fire in the end. Büttner assumes that the damaged modules and cables will be checked and that the entire system will be inspected before it is connected to the grid again, so that such an incident does not happen again.

Fire on daycare roof: “Fire department works great as a community”

But one thing was also shown during this operation: “It is again proof of how well the fire brigade works as a community,” explained Martin Schwarzkopf, group leader and press spokesman for the Niederdorfelden volunteer fire brigade. Because despite the deployment time on a Friday afternoon, when many volunteers work outside of town, the daily alert was ensured.

So the weir from Niederdorfelden was supported by comrades from Schöneck and Maintal. The Maintal turntable ladder was also used to provide additional security for the emergency services during the post-extinguishing work on the roof of the building. With all the trouble that is now pending with the damage settlement and the repair of the building, Mayor Klaus Büttner stated on Monday: “We are all happy that it ended up so well in the end.”

Shock in the day care center: photovoltaic system is on fire – groups are cleared

First report from Friday, July 29, 5:48 p.m.: Niederdorfelden – In Niederdorfelden in southern Hesse in the Main-Kinzig district, the roof of a daycare center caught fire on Friday afternoon (July 29). As reported by the southeast Hesse police in Offenbach, the photovoltaic system in the kindergarten on Lindeplatz had apparently caught fire. The fire brigade, which was informed about the roof fire at around 12.20 p.m., first brought the children and their carers outside safely and then extinguished the fire. According to initial reports, no one was injured. The roofing felt of the kindergarten was damaged by the fire – although apparently no smoke penetrated the building. According to Martin Schwarzkopf, spokesman for the Niederdorfelden volunteer fire brigade, extinguishing water got into the daycare building through the damaged roof. According to information from the fire brigade, it is not yet clear whether this will affect the opening of the daycare center next week. (Niklas Hecht)

Not all fires in the Main-Kinzig district go out as lightly as the roof truss fire in the daycare center in Niederdorfelden. When a garden shed caught fire in Steinau, the flames also reached an adjacent residential building and made it uninhabitable.
